Student Volunteers and Observers
Students must be 18 or older to volunteer.
Students may volunteer Monday - Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Student volunteer shifts are typically four hours each week. The majority of students who volunteer are interested in healthcare or medical related field of study. Students can also volunteer in other areas of the hospital such as business administration, human resources, quality assurance and others. Volunteers are placed by the volunteer coordinator in service areas where needed on a first-come, first-serve basis and as needed by the assigned areas. Applications are typically accepted the first two weeks of each semester and during the summer.
Students interested in volunteering can pick up a volunteer application packet in the human resources office, located on the 3rd floor of the Medical Office Building connected to the hospital (1497 Fair Road, Statesboro).
In addition to the volunteer application, students must submit:
- One letter of recommendation
- Copy of government issued photo ID
- Proof of personal health insurance
- Proof of MMR or immunity to measles, mumps and rubella
- Proof of 2 negative TB skin tests or 1 Quantiferon TB skin test within the past 12 months
- Proof of a flu shot within the past 12 months
- Drug screen test (This is done at the hospital, by appointment only, for a $25 fee - Cash only)
- Background screen/social security verification (this is completed by the hospital)
Students wishing to observe must be responsible for finding their own individual (sponsor) to observe prior to submitting their application. These students must also provide academic proof of observation hours required (this may include requirements for programs they may be applying to in the near future or current class requirements). If no academic proof of observation hours required, students must provide a written response to the following question: "Why are you interested in observing the specific area of your sponsor (individual you want to observe)?"
Acceptance of applicants will be based on application, background check, drug screen and student’s availability. The drug screen fee is non-refundable should the student not be accepted in the program.
